Despite writing this a year ago, every line of ‘The Poet’ recounts what my mum recently endured at the end of her life and also captures the essence of who she was - a fiercely intelligent, beautiful poet.
Originally I wrote this about my friends battle with depression and the spiralling of life events that led her to being sectioned. She felt alone, isolated and the medication left her with slurred speech. I only ever knew her as an articulate spoken-word artist. I believe all she needed was to be heard, respected and understood.
I guess ‘The Poet’ is about how far our society is from what matters right now, and how close we all are from it all getting too much and too difficult to deal with. People are more than just a number or a bed to spare. Our world is desperately in need of more love, compassion and kindness.
lyrics
they took you away from you
beautiful as you were
and those paintings of your words
could turn a backwards world around
you were running from the heartbreak
and fell into the worst fate
they could have helped you more
it must have been a mistake
but they covered up for their sake
yet they hover at your door
dark nights in the white cell
institutionalised hell
and that's where the angel fell
labelled unwell
and they diminished her light
but they don't even know about love,
about peace, about everything in between
no they don't know the heart, or the soul,
what's it like to be so cold?
and they say that you
are the one
who lost their mind?
the world is so unkind
I saw myself in you
every shade that they're blind to
and past the prison of the mind
the poet finds
that nirvana is inside
but they don't even know about love,
about peace, about everything in between
no they don't know the heart, or the soul,
what's it like to be so cold?
and they say that you
are the one
who lost their mind?
the world is so unkind
do you see yourself as worthy?
like no trouble could harm me?
oh we're one step away...
see yourself as worthy
while they build an army
oh to take my friend away
oh they don't even know about love,
about peace, about everything in between
no they don't know the heart, or the soul,
what's it like to be so cold?
and they say that you
are the one
who lost their mind?
oh but the world is so unkind
it's crazy to me
how the world is so unkind
